Racing games that respect your thumbs
Mobile racing games have a bad habit of plastering the screen with virtual controls until there's barely any track left to see. The good ones go the other way. Neon Drift Rally is a perfect example — hold to accelerate, tap to drift, and that's it.
Stripping the inputs down does two things. It keeps your thumbs out of the action so you can see where you're going, and it shifts the challenge from fumbling buttons to actually reading the track. Suddenly the skill is in your racing line, not in button layout.
I've started judging mobile racers almost entirely on this. If I spend the first ten minutes fighting the controls, the game has already lost. If I forget the controls exist and just chase a better lap time, it's a keeper.
The best part is that a clean control scheme makes a game instantly pick-up-and-play for everyone. Hand your phone to a friend and they're drifting within seconds. That accessibility is what arcade racing is supposed to be about.
